29-09-2009: Mixing it up in The Channel
Talented wordsmiths Mark Grist and MC Mixy will be developing their skills on a quiet island in The Channel after earning a writing contract through the Arts Council.
The pair, otherwise known as The Dead Poets, have signed a deal worth “thousands of pounds” that will see them jet off to Jersey, off the French coast, next week to hone their creativity.
The development is the latest in a line of good news for the act, who have performed over the past few months at a range of festivals across the country.
Their unique act sees Mark, the current Bard of the Fens, and MC Mixy comparing poetry with rap – discussing everything from modern artists, to Sir Walter Raleigh.
Back in January, The Evening Telegraph reported how the pair had signed a deal to tour with talented poet Murray Lachlan Young – who is on the books of record company EMI.
They have since hooked up with Phrased and Confused, with whom they have performed under at a number of UK festivals, including last weekend’s Summer Sundae Weekender, in Leicester.
Today, Mark (27), of Jubilee Street, in Woodston, spoke of his delight at the acts latest news and of their slowly developing, but none the less welcome, celebrity status.
“We were filming and presenting a film at Summer Sundae and we did a showcase of what we do as well. It was really good and really busy too. We got a great reaction and it was great that people were recognising us."
“Now the Arts Council have funded us to go to Jersey for a week to write and be as secluded as possible to get as much down as possible.”
From there, Mark, an English teacher at Hampton College, and MC Mixy are setting their sights high for the future, aiming for one of the biggest festivals of its kind.
“Hopefully next year we can take it to Edinburgh Fringe Festival next year, but we’ll need to raise some real funds for that to happen,” he added.
